Virgo ♍︎ - The Disenchanted Goddess (August 23 - September 22)
The Greeks considered Virgo to be a personification of Persephone, a maiden daughter of the Harvest Goddess Demeter. Hades, the God of the Underworld, kidnaps Persephone from her mother. Demeter abandoned her duties on Earth as retribution for losing her daughter. The Earth suffered an endless winter, leaving the land fruitless and barren. Eventually, Zeus intervened and petitioned Hades to return Persephone to Earth. A deal was struck between the gods, allowing Persephone to return to the Earth temporarily. Splitting the year between hell and earth, Persephone became the Queen of the Underworld for four months out of the year. During this time Demeter grieves, causing the northern hemisphere to plunge into winter.
